Trigg County Schools Receive Clean Audit For FY 2019

Trigg County Board of Education members approved the Fiscal Year 2019 audit report Thursday evening and heard from the Way Christian Youth Center, which is interested in purchasing some of the school’s land.

Anna Gentry with Duguid, Gentry & Associates reports the district had a clean opinion, which is what the school wants every year.

Gentry notes at the end of the fiscal year, which was June 30, 2019, the district had nearly $3.5-million in bonded debt.

Board members unanimously approved the audit, with a few findings shared with the district in regards to the Redbook. Gentry adds every district she works with has a few issues every year with the Redbook since it’s very complicated.

In addition, Way Christian Youth Center founder Carl Heckman appeared before the board to ask if they would consider selling land adjacent to their facility on Lafayette Street.

Heckman says they are in need of expanding the facility to add some additional storage and possible classroom space.

Depending on the time of year, Heckman notes they have an average daily attendance between 100 and 170 and at times have had more than 200. The center is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and is a Christian-based environment for 6th through 12th-grade students to visit after school.

Board members will discuss the idea further during their next meeting. If the board decides to sell the land, the purchase will have to go through the Kentucky Department of Education before it’s finalized.

Members also approved amended language for the agreement with the Cadiz Police Department for school resource officers. The language states that officers are not responsible for school disciplinary matters that are the responsibility of school administrators or employees. School board attorney Jack Lackey notes school boards across the state are having to approve this as a part of Senate Bill 1, that passed earlier this year.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday evening, December 12 at 6:00, as the second November meeting was canceled since it was scheduled for Thanksgiving Day.
