The first taste of winter weather for 2019 is providing many area students a day off from school, with some businesses and government offices also operating on a delayed schedule.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District Two spokesperson Keirsten Jaggers says crews spent much of Monday night spreading salt on area roadways.

District One spokesman Keith Todd says he is hearing similar problems.

The Christian County ECC reports Interstate 24 is slick and hazardous, with numerous tractor-trailers off the roadway.  Other major and secondary roads in Christian, Trigg, Caldwell, Todd and surrounding counties are also reportedly slick and hazardous.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is reporting a major traffic tie-up through the overnight hours on Interstate 24 in the eastbound lanes near the Caldwell-Lyon County line.  The initial traffic wreck occurred late Monday night, with the roadway blocked through the morning hours.

As temperatures began to drop and rain changed to snow Monday afternoon, school districts around the area decided to cancel after school activities.  As the snow continued to fall through the evening hours, several school districts in the area decided to cancel classes for Tuesday in anticipation of slick and hazardous road conditions.
