New Graduation Requirements Presented To School Board

The Christian County Board of Education heard an update Thursday night regarding the new minimum graduation requirements beginning with the current freshman class.

District Assessment Coordinator Tracey Leath says the biggest change for the 2019-2020 freshmen is the English and Math credit requirements, which will be based on their individual learning plan.

Another change, Leath says, is freshmen will need to complete a graduation qualifier in which they can select 500 hours of exceptional work experience, complete a Kentucky Labor Cabinet approved apprenticeship or other options.

She says there is one more change the current 8th graders have and that is they must either pass a 10th-grade reading and math assessment or show an alternate competency via portfolio.

She adds other credits remain the same, but Algebra II has been removed as a graduation requirement. Students will still be required to pass a civics test and have a minimum of 24 credits to graduate.

The board went into closed session and when the meeting resumed they voted to retain the services of Bowling Green attorney Mike Owsley to represent the district in an unemployment appeal.

The school board will have a special called meeting Thursday evening, November 7, at 6:00.
