Veterans Depart Hopkinsville for Honor Flight to D.C.

Five veterans departed Hopkinsville with a police escort Tuesday morning for an Honor Flight Bluegrass tour to Washington, D.C.

Honor Flight Bluegrass is a nonprofit volunteer group that strives to honor veterans and provide them with the opportunity to visit their respective war memorials in the nation’s capitol.

Volunteer Lela Hale told the News Edge on Monday they will be spending all day Wednesday in D.C. to show the veterans the memorials, landmarks, and the changing of the guard in the Arlington National Cemetery.

During the send off Tuesday morning, World War II and Korea veteran Jim Etheridge of Cadiz says he is excited for the trip and honored to be part of it.

The other veterans making the trip are Henry Breithaupt of Hopkinsville, who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam; Elwood Richardson of Hopkinsville, who served in World War II; Chester Going of Murray, who served in Vietnam; and James Burton of Hopkinsville, who also served in Vietnam.

The veterans will return to a welcome home ceremony on Thursday at Cornell Memory Center in Hopkinsville.
