A Lyon County farmer lost thousands of dollars of tobacco in a barn fire over the weekend.

Kuttawa Fire Chief Bill Compton says that crews with the Eddyville Fire Department were called to reports of a barn on fire at the end of Seldon Mitchell Road just before 10:20 a.m. He adds when crews arrived they found the barn, owned by Jerry Mitchell, fully engulfed.

Chief Compton notes Kuttawa crews provided mutual aid with both crews working to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby soybean field and double-wide trailer. He stated that a neighboring farmer used a tractor to help move and separate the walls of the barn so that crews could smother the fire.

The barn, which was full of recently harvested tobacco, was determined a complete loss, with damages in the tens of thousands of dollars. The cause of the fire remains unknown and no injuries were reported in the incident.
