A Hopkinsville man convicted in the 2014 murder of his mother was formally sentenced in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday afternoon.
Jamal Mounts was convicted by a jury in May after a two day trial in the murder of his mother, 65-year old Roxie Mounts, who was found unresponsive in the breezeway at the Mason’s Pointe Apartments on Elm Street in March 2014. He was also found guilty for the attempted murder and assault of a neighbor, Marvelyn Spray.
Mounts and public defenders, Stephanie Mize and Eric Bearden appeared before Judge Andrew Self for formal sentencing after a jury recommended life during the sentencing phase of his trial in March. Mize told Judge Self she believed it would be beneficial for Mounts to receive mental health treatment while incarcerated.
Bearden then added he anticipated they would be filing an appeal to the Kentucky Supreme Court.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling then asked Judge Self to impose the jury’s recommended sentence, at which time Judge Self formally sentenced Mounts to life in prison.
Judge Self added when Mize and Bearden submitted the appropriate paperwork, he would assign the Department of Public Advocacy to represent Mounts in the appeal.
