City To Break Ground On Phase 2 Of Greenway Rail Trail

Mayor Carter Hendricks announced Tuesday the city will break ground next week for the second phase of the Hopkinsville Greenway Rail Trail that extends from Pardue Lane to near Eagle Way Bypass.

Mayor Hendricks says they are excited to continue with the Hopkinsville Greenway and expresses his appreciation for the support and continued dedication of City Council and staff to invest in the significant quality of life project. In addition, he says this phase will help them to build a safer, happier, and healthier Hopkinsville since they know that 21st-century cities are connected cities.

As previously reported, a pedestrian bridge will be constructed over Lafayette Road and Country Club Lane, one of the busiest intersections in the city. The over $4.6 million project, part of the WINS projects and supported by a couple of grants, will add another 1.7 miles of trail to the existing greenway system, taking it from Pardue Lane to Foston Chapel Road.

The Hopkinsville Surface and Stormwater Utility, in partnership with the City, will add landscaping and improvements to redesign the existing detention basin, known as “The Pit”.

City officials say the expanded trail system continues to be a key component of ongoing local healthy community initiatives. Along with the redevelopments of 2nd Street and Joe Mumford Parks, they say this first-class rail trail expansion will greatly enhance recreational opportunities for local residents and area visitors.

The public is invited to the groundbreaking celebration Thursday afternoon, October 3, at 2:00 at the Pardue Lane Trailhead located at 151 Pardue Lane.
