The Friends of Land Between the Lakes recently received a $5,000 grant from the western chapter of the Tennessee Valley Authority Retirees Association to support its School Field Trip Grant program.
Officials explain the program provides funding for public schools within a 100-mile radius of Land Between the Lakes to bring students on educational field trips to the Woodlands Nature Station, Golden Pond Planetarium, Homeplace 1850s Working Farm and Brandon Spring Group Center. The Friends of LBL have administered the School Field Grant program since 2001, with support from the USDA Forest Service and a variety of other private donors.
According to officials, school recipients are selected largely based on demonstrated economic need and whether they would be visiting Land Between the Lakes for the first time as a field trip. The grant funded 33 groups to visit LBL in the 2018-2019 school year, with a total of 3,118 students participating.
