Man Killed In Coal Mining Accident In Hopkins County

A Providence man was killed in an underground coal mine accident in Hopkins County Thursday evening.

Officials with the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet report 39-year old Jeremy Elder died Thursday from injuries at the Cardinal Mine located Madisonville. They say Elder, a miner helper with 15-years experience, began his shift at 6:30 Thursday morning and died as a result of a vehicle accident.

The mine is operated by Warrior Coal, which is a subsidiary of Alliance Resource Partners.

The Division of Mine Safety is investigating the accident. All mining operations were shut down Thursday and officials say production will remain closed Friday in the accident area.

Officials indicate the Division of Mine Safety last inspected the mine in June of this year.
