Hopkinsville Mayor Carter Hendricks has recommended 20-year fire service veteran and Interim Fire Chief Steve Futrell as the next chief of the city’s fire department. City Council will consider Futrell’s appointment at the next meeting, September 17th.
Mayor Hendricks says he is excited to nominate Futrell to assume leadership as the Chief of the Hopkinsville Fire Department. He adds that Futrell’s experience and knowledge of the City’s services combined with his positive attitude, vision for the department and deep love for Hopkinsville made him the best choice. Hendricks says he is confident Futrell will take the fire department to the next level upon council’s approval.
Futrell, a lifelong resident of Christian County, says he is very excited and humbled for the opportunity. He adds the Hopkinsville Fire Department is a strong department and it’s an honor for him to have the opportunity to lead them into the future.
Before being promoted to Interim Fire Chief, Futrell served as the department’s Deputy Chief of Operations and Assistant EMS Director for over two years. Over his two decades of experience, Futrell has many accomplishments including receiving the 2018 Fire Chiefs Excellence Award, 2016 Fire Officer of the Year as selected by all Hopkinsville Fire Department personnel, and the Kentucky Board of EMS Recognition Award.
City officials say Futrell, a Hopkinsville High School graduate, currently attends Hopkinsville Community College where he will complete his Associates Degree in Fire Science this fall. Futrell and his wife Denise have been married for 23-years and have two sons.
The fire chief position became available after Freddie Montgomery retired August 1st and was as the new Chief of the Clarksville Fire and Rescue.
