First United Methodist Church Daycare Director Resigns

The director of the daycare at First United Methodist Daycare in Hopkinsville has submitted her resignation. This comes on the heels of an inspection in June conducted by the Cabinet Health and Family Services which found some deficiencies in the way children were being cared for.

During Sunday’s service at the church, Lindsey Adams announced Cindy Dougherty’s resignation and that they are looking for qualified applicants to serve as director.

In addition, Adams says the board plans to hire a ‘daycare support committee’.

Among the accusations against Dougherty, the inspection cited she placed two misbehaving children in the Little Chapel for disciplinary purposes, which was not an approved daycare area. The inspection also cited other actions taken by Dougherty to attempt to discipline the children. The issues found in the report forced the closure of the daycare facility for about a week in July.

A former employee at the daycare, Allison Simpson, was arrested in January for the alleged abuse of two children. She was indicted by the Christian County Grand Jury in April on two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment and second -degree criminal abuse of a child under 12 years of age. She is scheduled to be back in court in August.
