Brafman Sentenced For Arson And Hate Crimes

A Cerulean woman, convicted in April of setting fire to a Princeton Road mobile home occupied by six people, was formally sentenced in Christian Circuit Court Wednesday.

Karen Brafman was found guilty by a jury on first-degree arson, second-degree arson, and six counts of attempted murder. The charges stem from a state police investigation into a fire that occurred May 11, 2018, at a mobile home located at 8894 Princeton Road and occupied by Craig Calloway, Ashley Webster, and their four children.

At the formal hearing, Brafman and her defense attorney, Eric Bearden, appeared before Judge John Atkins. Bearden indicated to the judge he is preparing file an appeal in this case.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Boling says in the judgment this case was charged as a hate crime and asked the judge to determine if by ponderance of the evidence that this is the finding; however, Bearden argued there was no racial animosity.

Judge Atkins agreed with the jury’s guilty verdict and sentenced Brafman to life consistent with the jury’s verdict.

Judge Atkins says the judgment would be entered into record Wednesday and that would begin the countdown for the defense attorney’s obligations to file the appeal.
