McConnell And Other Officials Discuss Asian Carp Problem

Dealing with Asian Carp continues to be a major focus for U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Regional and state government officials gathered in Calvert City Tuesday morning to discuss the carp infestation on Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake.

McConnell notes he is making it a priority to improve both lakes and bring back the tourism that has been suffering due to the invasive fish.

Trigg County Judge/Executive Hollis Alexander tells the News Edge the discussion with several government organizations and community officials was very positive.

Lyon County Judge/Executive Wade White echoed Alexander’s comments about how the meeting went adding having the support of McConnell will be a huge shot in the arm for the issue.

He adds the unified method is done quickly and does not injure or kill many nearby native fish.

Officials hope to start implementing the unified method in January or February of 2020.

White adds in the meantime, Lyon County will be looking into some ways to help increase subsidies to help commercial fishermen who are trying to make a living by catching the fish.

Before speaking to media, McConnell and the officials gathered in the basement of the Calvert City – City Hall to discuss the problems and ways to combat the overpopulation of Asian Carp.

Other officials on hand for the meeting included 8th district representative Walker Thomas and the Commissioner of Kentucky’s Fish and Wildlife Resources Rich Storm.
