School Food Service Employee Diagnosed With HEP A

The Christian County Health Department is reporting a case of hepatitis A was diagnosed Wednesday in an employee who handled food at Indian Hills Elementary School.

CCHD Instruction Design and Marketing Specialist Amanda Bassingthwaite says the case was confirmed Wednesday and an investigation found that the risk of Indian Hills Elementary School patrons becoming infected is very low.

Health officials say hepatitis A is a viral infection of the liver that can cause loss of appetite, nausea, tiredness, fever, stomach pain, brown-colored urine, and light-colored stools. Yellowing of the skin or eyes may also appear. People may have some or none of the symptoms. It could take up to 50 days after being exposed to the virus for someone to become ill.

Bassingthwaite also shares the best way to prevent the spread of hepatitis A.

She adds hepatitis A vaccinations are available at the Christian County Health Department.
