2nd Reading Of Hopkinsville Solid Waste Commercial Rate Increase Approved

Hopkinsville City Council Tuesday night approved the second reading of increasing the rates for commercial garbage and trash and a resolution supporting applications for a grant to purchase an additional public transportation vehicle.

Council members also unanimously approved the Hopkinsville Solid Rate rate increase of seven to nine percent for commercial garbage and trash. General Manager Tony Sicari previously explained the increase would generate an additional $10,000 to $12,000 a month to cover an increase in operational costs. The new rates will go into effect April 1st.

In other business, council members approved a resolution with the Pennyrile Allied Community Services (PACS) Board to apply for funding, not to exceed $94,867 for an additional public transportation vehicle and related operations for Hopkinsville Transit.

That was Mayor Carter Hendricks who also stated the public transit system is exceeding expectations.

The resolution also gives the mayor authorization to sign any documents related to the grant applications.

And Mayor Hendricks and council members recognized the top 10 Mayor’s scholars, who have to submit an essay and meet eligibility requirements.

He noted there were over 600 essays written by middle school students attending each of the five public and private middle schools in Hopkinsville. The top 62 essayists were invited to a day-long field trip to the campus of Murray State University last month.

Through the county-wide competition, the students earned cash prizes ranging from $25 for those essays judged 2nd through 10th place and $50 for the 1st place essay.
