Kentucky Teacher Group Calls For Sickout

A statewide teacher group is calling on all teachers to call in sick Thursday.

Kentucky 120 United, a teacher group formed last year, is encouraging all teachers to call in sick Thursday to protest House Bill 525.  The bill proposes to reorganize the state pension board.  The group made the call for a sick out on social media Wednesday afternoon.

The Courier-Journal reports the Fayette County School District has cancelled class Thursday because they don’t have enough substitutes to cover for all the teachers that called in sick.  The school district said roughly 40 percent of teachers called in sick.

The Jefferson County Public School District and Madison County Schools are also closed Thursday.

Christian County Schools Communications Director John Rittenhouse said the district has not had any teachers call in to participate in the sickout.  Trigg County Schools Superintendent Travis Hamby says the number of staff absences look normal for the school district.
