Trigg School Board Moving Forward In Renovation Projects

Trigg County School board members voted to move to the next phase for three projects within the district during their meeting Thursday night.

Members approved the BG-3 and BG-1 forms that must be turned in to the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) for the security vestibule project for the middle and high schools. The original forms that were sent to KDE had some numerical errors on them. JKS Architects Keith Sharp showed board members the updated forms and what the plans are for both schools.

The high school vestibule project will include a renovation to the front office. The middle school project will move the front entrance and office to the side door closest to where the nurse’s office is currently located and will feature the school resource center moving to the entrance. The approximate cost for both vestibules is around $280,000.

Superintendent Travis Hamby says the project comes from a recommendation made by the school safety task force that was formed last year after the fatal shooting at Marshall County High School.

The new forms will be submitted to KDE. Board members also approved to authorize JKS Architects to send out bid documents and receive bids for the vestibule project once they receive approval from KDE.

In other action, members approved the revised schematic design for the primary/intermediate school renovation project. The new design has an appropriate sized elementary school gymnasium located to the left of the primary school entrance that will have bleachers to seat around 500 students, with the current gymnasium being turned into a two-floor space for classrooms.

Other items in the schematic include; adding a wider staircase towards the middle of the school, making a permanent connection between the primary/intermediate school and middle school and getting rid of the “tunnel”, moving the preschool playground between the two schools, and having one central hallway that will make the upper level less confusing for parents.

Hamby adds the schematics were previously approved by the board in November but they ran into a budget issue.

Another issue they ran into was with KDE.

Though they can not do a major renovation in the kindergarten and first-grade area, they will remodel the restrooms that serve those students so they meet the latest Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.
