Kentucky Highway Crews Preparing For Snow Event

Due to the chance of some wintry precipitation overnight Wednesday, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews are beginning to pre-treat area highways across western Kentucky.

Spokesman Keith Todd says initial accumulation estimates indicate the winter weather event has the potential to create travel issues during the overnight hours Wednesday and on the morning commute Thursday.

Highway crews will be on the road Tuesday and Wednesday pre-treating roadways by applying brine. Todd says motorists should be alert for slow moving trucks working along highways as crews go about their work.

According to Todd, if there is rain in the forecast prior to the start of frozen precipitation it will wash away the salt left behind by the drying brine. In addition, if temperatures are below about 18 degrees crews are unable to pre-treat as the brine may freeze when sprayed on the pavement creating slick spots.

As highway crews prepare for the approaching snow and ice event, the Transportation Cabinet encourages drivers to do your part by checking your vehicle to assure it is ready for winter driving.

District 1 includes the twelve counties of Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Crittenden, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Livingston, Lyon, Marshall, McCracken, and Trigg.
