A South Carolina man and Lyon County native reportedly pulled off an upset during the General Election Tuesday night becoming the first Democrat to win the 1st Congressional District seat in 40 years.

Joe Cunningham, son of Supreme Court Justice Bill Cunningham of Eddyville, defeated Republican state Representative Katie Arrington by 3,509 votes, or 1.4 percent of the total 268,111 votes cast, according to media reports.

Cunningham, an attorney in Charleston, replaces U.S. Representative Mark Sanford who was defeated by Arrington in the June GOP primary.

Joe is one of five sons of Judge Cunningham, who was elected to the Kentucky Supreme Court in November 2006 to represent the 1st Appellate District.
