11-Year Old Child Injured In Todd County Wreck Dies

The child critically injured in a head-on collision on Pond River Road Tuesday that claimed the lives of his mother and another woman has died from his injuries. Kentucky State Police reports 11-year old Peyton Baker of Elkton succumbed to his injuries Thursday.

The wreck occurred Tuesday afternoon around 1:40 in the 2800 block of Pond River Road in Elkton. State police say a preliminary investigation revealed 25-year old Zachary Cannon of Elkton was driving an SUV northbound and for an unknown reason ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, and crashed head-on into a car driven by 32-year old Janine Watzke of Allegre. Watzke and her front seat passenger, 30-year old Julie Powell, also of Allegre, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Todd County Coroner’s Office. The Coroner’s Office told the News Edge the juvenile in the back-seat of the vehicle was critically injured. He was airlifted to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville. Police reported Cannon was flown to Skyline Hospital in Nashville for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Kentucky State Police are continuing to investigate the fatal wreck.
