An investigation is underway at Fort Campbell after a soldier was shot and killed on the military base Sunday night.

Around 10:00 p.m., all gates at the military base were closed for about an hour while military police investigated the shooting in on-post housing, according to a social media post on Fort Campbell’s Facebook page. Officials say the spouse was taken into custody after the fatal shooting.

Acting senior commander of the 101st Airborne Division, Brigade General K. Todd Royar says their hearts and prayers are with the families involved. He adds any loss of a soldier has a profound impact on the entire Army family.

Fort Campbell’s military police initiated standard procedures to secure the post upon notification of the shooting incident. Royar says Fort Campbell continues to be secure and their priority remains the safety and security of soldiers, family members, and civilian personnel.

Army officials indicate the names of those involved are being withheld pending notification of family members.

The incident is being investigated by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command and the FBI. Army officials say no further details will be released at this time.
