HWEA Recognized For Clean Water Excellence Achievement

Hopkinsville Water Environment Authority was among several recognitions during the Hopkinsville City Council meeting Tuesday night. HWEA recently received an award for clean water excellence.

HWEA President and CEO Derrick Watson said they were recognized last month at the Water Professionals Conference in Nashville by the Kentucky-Tennessee section of the Water Environment Association for excellence in the administration of HWEA’s pretreatment program. He added their pretreatment program is composed of 17 significant industrial users.

In addition, Watson stated they have developed and implemented their fats, oils and grease program.

He also thanked the City Council for their leadership and support for their approval of HWEA projects and improvements that are necessary in order to protect our environment for future generations to come by providing clean and wastewater treatment.

Watson also expressed his gratitude to his staff, which includes 70 water professionals. He also thanked four staff members who helped HWEA receive the prestigious award.

In other recognitions, the Beautification Commission selected Pennyrile Electric and McGee Pest Control for Keeping Hopkinsville Beautiful awards.

CFO Robert Martin

And City Financial Officer Robert Martin was recognized for receiving the Excellence in Financial Reporting Certificate from the Government Finance and Accounting Office and Association.

In business action, Martin gave the first financial report of the year, which showed a more than $300,000 deficit in revenue over expenses and encumbrances in the general fund. However, he explained this is normal at the beginning of the fiscal year and stated there is no reason to be concerned.

Council members unanimously approved declaring a 2007 Sterling Street Sweeper and a 1999 International Bucket Truck as surplus, and also authorized Mayor Carter Hendricks to execute a Memorandum of Understanding with Christian County Fiscal Court t apply for a grant for nearly $14,000 from the 2018 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program to be given to the Christian County Juvenile Drug Court.

Kiwanis Club Soap Box Derby racers

Mayor Carter also recognized the Kiwanis Club Soap Box Derby racers who competed at the International Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio.

Mayor Carter presented the competitors a City of Hopkinsville pin and a Kiwanis Solar Eclipse Ornament.

The Hopkinsville Committee of the Whole will meet Thursday night at 6:00 and will discuss the property tax.
