Police say a 39-year old man drowned after jumping in the river following a traffic stop Tuesday night.

Clarksville Police Department Public Information Officer Jim Knoll reports the traffic stop occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m. for a Jeep with a brake light out. When the vehicle stopped on the parking lot of the Waffle House on North Riverside Drive, he says a male immediately jumped out of the passenger side of the Jeep and ran toward the river. Police reportedly recognized the man and knew he had several warrants on file including a felony warrant for Aggravated Assault. Knoll says the man then jumped in and started to swim across the river, but police say about halfway across, he went into distress and yelled for help. Officers encouraged to him to swim back toward them and went into the water to help, but were unable to reach the man before he went under the water and never resurfaced.

Clarksville Fire Rescue and Montgomery County Search and Rescue found the deceased man in the water shortly after 11:30 Tuesday night.

Knoll says the name of the drowning victim is not being released at this time pending notification of family.
