Kentucky Lottery Celebrating Record-Breaking Year

Kentucky Lottery is celebrating some good news. For the second year in a row, sales of Kentucky Lottery tickets have exceeded a billion dollars in a single fiscal year.

For Fiscal Year 2018 which ended June 30, lottery officials indicate overall sales were $1,042,512,000, the larges sales figure in Kentucky Lottery history, and a $42 million jump over last year’s record-breaking number.

According to a release, scratch-off tickets once again were the largest individual game category, finishing the year at $613.1 million, an increase of $9.3 million from the previous year. Mega Millions saw the largest percentage increase of any game, rising from $10.7 million to $39.8 million. Officials say the increase was due in large part to several large jackpot runs over the course of Fiscal Year 2018. Powerball also saw solid jackpot performance, bringing in $77.9 million in sales.

Lottery officials report daily draw games continued to perform strongly, but Pick 4 sales declined slightly for the Fiscal Year 2018.

Keno continued its positive growth trend, ending the year with $82.8 million, while iLottery internet sales also rose about $5 million dollars for the fiscal year.

KLC President and CEO Tom Delacenserie says several new initiatives really helped push sales to this record-breaking level. He adds an increased emphasis on marketing and in-store messaging, changes in prize structures that players really liked, and new measures implemented by their outstanding staff and retailers are the reason for this increase. He notes Fiscal Year 2018 was a year they laid groundwork for continued success, and they look to continue this growth pattern into the next fiscal year.

Transfers to the Commonwealth were also at a record level – $262.8 million, an increase of $11.2 million.
