A former Stewart County, Tennessee sheriff’s detective was indicted Monday in connection to the December suicide of his acquaintance.

On December 2nd, at the request of the 23rd District Attorney General Ray Crouch, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations says special agents began investigating the shooting death of a man at a home on Lower Cross Creek Road in Indian Mound. During the investigation, the release says agents determined the shooting was self-inflicted and involved the service weapon of off-duty Stewart County Sheriff’s Deputy, 49-year old David Evans. The investigation further revealed that, before the man’s death, Evans allowed him to ride in his patrol unit while the man drank alcohol and used the lights and siren inappropriately. After the two returned to the man’s home, and while the deputy was inside the house, the man reportedly retrieved the deputy’s service weapon from his patrol unit and shot himself.

The Stewart County Grand Jury indicted Evans, who resigned his position with the sheriff’s office, with one count of Official Misconduct. TBI officials say Evans was booked into the Stewart County Jail Tuesday on a $1,000 bond.
