The Cave-in-Rock Ferry will reduce its operating hours beginning July 1st. A Cave-in-Rock Ferry social media post says Crittenden County Judge-Executive Perry Newcom confirmed the ferry change, Friday.

According to the post, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has entered into an agreement with the Crittenden County Fiscal Court to fund Cave-in-Rock Ferry’s operations through September 30, 2018. The Illinois Department of Transportation has also matched funds for the same three-month period. The temporary agreement provides funding to meet operational expenses of the ferry while a long-term agreement is evaluated. Meanwhile, ferry operating hours will go from 16 hours to 12 hours each day, effective Sunday, July 1st.

Under the temporary schedule, Cave-in-Rock officials say the ferry, which crosses the Ohio River between Cave-in-Rock, Illinois and Marion, Kentucky, will continue to operate 12 hours a day, seven days a week with service beginning at 6:00 a.m. from the Illinois shore with the final departure from the Illinois landing at 5:40 p.m. The last run from the Kentucky Landing will be at 5:50 p.m.

Judge Newcom says the temporary operational change will allow all parties time to work through some of the financial issues facing the ferry.

The Cave-in-Rock Ferry is operated by LRL, Inc. and administered by the Crittenden Fiscal Court through the Ohio River Valley Authority (ORA). The ORA receives joint funding from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and Illinois Department and Illinois Department of Transportation.
