Fishing Report June 23rd – 24th, 2018

LARGEMOUTH BASS: By all reports, what fish are being caught are coming from deep off-shore ledges and channel breaks. Bass fishing has only been fair with most anglers targeting main lake ledges in hopes of finding bigger fish. However, despite the hot weather some bass have been taken around shallow weeds and blowdowns on shorelines and island rims.

Crappie: Crappie fishing the last few days have been nothing short of amazing. I know to a minnow dunker, caster, or 2-poler, fishing with crankbaits sounds about as fun as watching paint dry. After long stretches of watching lines with nothing happening, I might almost tend to agree. The last few days have seen very few extended periods of inactivity. Some times it has bordered on bedlam.

Bluegill/Red Ears:  Several bluegill have been taken in deeper depths this week by crappie anglers. It appears the early stages of a mayfly hatch provided an abundant buffet of bait and that curtailed activity. When the larvae stage of the mayfly emerges from the lake bottom and hatches into an adult fly, practically all fish feed on it in some capacity. That additional food source is tough competition for anglers at times

Catfish:  It has been slow to zip. Some have been fishing deep rocky areas of the lakes plus below both KY and Smithland Dams. Bait is hard to come by in the rivers but the fish don’t seem to be feeding anyway. Some channel and blue cats are feeding on days we have considerable current being generated. Try cut baits, worms and leeches fished right above the bottom.

White & Yellow Bass:  Some jump activity is being observed, especially in LBL bays and close to river channel bars. Slab spoons, in-line spinners and lipless baits like Rattletraps are all working. The willow fly hatches are helping all around.
