The three Democrat challengers in the Hopkinsville City Council race for Wards 1, 6 and 7 discussed their platform and their goals for their Ward and the City as a whole during a forum hosted by the Focus 21 Minority Leadership Thursday night.
Ward 1 challenger, Darvin Adams says he is a visionary and his platform is about growth and development, infrastructural improvements, neighborhood beautification, youth projects, feeding programs, putting Inner-City REZ money where it was intended to be utilized, and educational advancement. He feels the greatest problem is the City’s leadership.
During closing remarks, Adams says he wants to see growth and development.
Ward 6 challenger, Shannon Worden says he is also a visionary and stands behind Adams platform, but would also like to see sustainability, curbside recycling, closing the academic gap, more job opportunities, and the City not using bonds for projects when there is a surplus.
Worden says he is a blue-collar worker, and he believes there are times taxes are necessary. However, he feels those on a fixed income need to be taken into account and how they will be affected.
And Ward 7 challenger, Faye Oglesby says her platform includes education, property upkeep, and also taking into account those on a fixed income when raising taxes.
She says moving the city forward involves everyone, young and old must come together, put aside their differences, stop being judgmental and make our city the greatest place to work, live and raise our families.
Moderator Dr. Eileen Gold explained to the audience before the challengers spoke that Democrat incumbents Thomas Grant, Wendell Lynch, and Terry Parker were not able to attend because of a Committee of the Whole meeting, which she said was not scheduled prior to the forum being set on Thursday night.
The forum was held at the Hopkinsville Community College Auditorium.
