The two Democratic candidates for Christian County Coroner faced-off in a debate Tuesday night that gave voters insight into their personalities, qualifications, and overall knowledge. The two leaned on their respective experience in their vie for the office.

Melton Brooks, lifelong Hopkinsville resident with over 30 years in the funeral business, says he believes in serving people. He adds he brings with him 15 years of counseling experience.

Zach Lamb, Christian County native and current Deputy Coroner, says good relationships are key to the office. He adds serving people is the reason why he joined the coroner’s office in first place.

Speaking to his qualifications, Brooks spoke of having owned a funeral parlor up until last year and the experience that comes with it. He adds he would complete any additional courses necessary for the job.

Lamb, meanwhile, based his qualifications on already having been certified in his current capacity and having taken courses in management.

The county is the second largest by land area in the state and the two differed slightly in their answers as to whether they would hire personnel in addition to the two deputy coroner positions. Lamb says he does not expect to, while Brooks says it would depend on the budget and currently sees the current level of employees in the office as sufficient.

The Democratic primary is set for May 22. A lunch recognizing all candidates and office holders is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18 at the First Baptist Church fellowship hall in Hopkinsville.
