A former firefighter faced-off against a former mortician Tuesday night for the Republican ticket for Coroner in Christian County. One plans to bring compassion and sensitivity to the office, while the other touched on a budget-saving plan and prompt response times.

Hopkinsville native Scott Daniel, a retired city firefighter and EMS worker, says he is ready to see a “real coroner’s office,” something he says Christian County has never had.

Daniel retorted, saying time spent in a funeral parlor doesn’t necessarily make a person qualified for the office. He adds he dealt with death as well during his time in public service.

As for what they intend to bring to the office, McKnight says compassion and sensitivity.

In Kentucky, a medical degree is not a prerequisite to hold the office of coroner. There is, however, a 40-hour course a person can complete after election. Both candidates say that, combined with their respective experience, is all that is necessary.Additionally, Daniel says he plans to save the county about $300,000 from his budget but did not give specifics. He and McKnight say they would make a determination of whether to hire more people based on need.

The Republican primary is set for May 22. A lunch recognizing all candidates and office holders is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 18 at the First Baptist Church fellowship hall in Hopkinsville.
