A man familar to law enforcement was arrested Tuesday afternoon in connection to a theft in Christian County. The Christian County Sheriff’s Office reports Claude Russell of Cadiz, who is charged in the Trigg County murder of Chantell Humphries more than a decade ago, was taken into custody shortly before 3:45pm on Turner Loop.

Deputies responded to Turner Loop for a possible burglary in progress shortly before 2:00 Tuesday afternoon and met with the caller who reportedly observed Russell leaving the driveway of the home with several metal objects in the bed of a truck. Deputies say the caller stated that Russell tried to evade him in the vehicle and when he realized he couldn’t, Russell parked the truck and ran on foot from the area.

State troopers then located and detained a male matching the caller’s description. Deputies say the property owner arrived at the scene and identified the contents of Russell’s truck as the items that the property owner had stored beside and behind his shop. The property owner told deputies the total value of all of the items was $2,000.00. Deputies say the caller then identified Russell and he was taken into custody.

Russell was booked into the Christian County Jail charged with Theft By Unlawful Taking $500 or More But Under $10,000.

Russell was charged with the 2002 murder of Chantell Humphries in Trigg County. The first trial ended in a mistrial. The murder and an additional rape charge is still pending in Trigg Circuit Court awaiting a decision on an appeal.
