Seatbelt Violation Leads To Drug Trafficking Charge

A seat belt violation reportedly led to a Hopkinsville man being charged with marijuana trafficking. Hopkinsville Police report 24-year old Shaquan Harris was pulled over for not wearing a seat belt shortly before 5:40 Tuesday afternoon at South Jessup and West 7th Streets.

Upon contact with Harris, police say they could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. During a search, officers reportedly found a large glass jar with several grams of marijuana and a digital scale on the floor of the passenger’s seat. Police say a passenger in the vehicle stated that Harris owned the marijuana.

Harris was cited to court for charges of Trafficking in Marijuana (Less Than 8 Ounces), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Failure to Wear Seat Belts.
