The City of Princeton unveiled a new memorial in the Trail of Tears Commemorative Park over the weekend.

City officials held an official dedication ceremony Saturday afternoon for the unveiling of a bronze a bas-relief sculpture entitled “A Mother’s Burden”, which depicts a Cherokee woman carrying her child on her back. Officials announced on a social media post that the memorial is a 2×4 foot sculpture, affixed to a granite slab and is a memorial to the 16,000 Cherokee who were forced to walk the Trail of Tears in which more than 4,000 people died.

“A Mother’s Burden” was sculpted by Matt Large, who was on hand at the ceremony along with several dignitaries.

The Trail of Tears Commemorative Park is located at the intersection of East Washington and Edwards Street, across from Big Springs Park in downtown Princeton. The ceremony was scheduled to be held at the park, but due to rainy weather it was moved inside the Princeton Tourist Welcome Center.
