TVA Warns Of Rising Water Levels On Lakes And Rivers

Due to the additional rainfall, the Tennessee Valley Authority is warning residents that a flood crest coming on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers will likely cause water levels on the Kentucky Reservoir to rise significantly into early next week. TVA spokesman Scott Brooks says they are coordinating flood control efforts with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that runs the Cumberland River system, Lake Barkley, and the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

Brooks reports river management operations at Kentucky Dam during floods on the lower Ohio and Mississippi Rivers avoids about $20 million in damages annually on average. He adds a similar flood on the Ohio River occurred in January 2016 and TVA operations provided a flood reduction benefit of nearly $140 million in damages avoided. As soon as the crest on the Ohio River passes through Paducah, Brooks says they will be able to go back to more normal operations and start releasing water out of Kentucky Dam again.
