Many roads across Kentucky are in bad shape and need to be milled and repaved, not just patched. The National Transportation Research Group, TRIP is releasing reports this week about the state of each Transportation Districts’ surfaces. Associate Director of Research and Communication, Carolyn Kelly says they looked at the conditions of the roads and bridges as well as the monetary need to fix them.
In District 1, the report says 17 percent of the roads are in poor condition and 23 percent are in fair condition. In District 2, those numbers are 23 percent poor and 21 percent fair. District 3 has 17 percent in poor and 28 percent in fair. The reports say the government only has enough money to repave between two and three percent of the roads.
TRIP also looked at bridges in each district. In Districts 1 and 2, the report shows about 7 percent of the bridges are rated as structurally deficient. District 3 has only 3 percent at that ranking.
Of the 25 most heavily travel structures in each district, there is one in Trigg County on Kentucky 339 over Massac Creek; there are three in Christian County on Walnut Street over the CSX railroad, Millbrooke Drive over Little River, and Kentucky 272 over an unnamed creek; and there are none in Todd County.
District 1 includes Trigg and Lyon counties. District 2 includes Christian and Caldwell counties. District 3 includes Todd and Logan counties.
TRIP is a non-profit organization that researches, evaluates, and distributes economics and technical data on surface transportation issues. The group is funded by several businesses, including insurance companies and equipment manufactures.
