Hopkinsville Man Charged With Trafficking Drugs

Police say a traffic stop for a headlight violation in the City of Earlington Monday night landed a Hopkinsville man behind bars charged with DUI and trafficking drugs. State police say the traffic stop occurred shortly after 10:30pm when the trooper observed a vehicle with only one headlight and driving carelessly.

Upon contact with the driver, 37-year old Michael Wimberly, the trooper says he smelled alcohol on Wimberly's breath. Wimberly was arrested after field sobriety tests were conducted and the trooper determined he was driving the vehicle under the influence.

During a search of the vehicle, state police reportedly discovered a partially smoked marijuana cigarette and an open alcohol container, along with a bag containing suspected marijuana, and several small bags containing approximately two ounces of suspected methamphetamine.

Wimberly was booked into the Hopkins County Detention Center charged with Possession of Open Alcoholic Beverage Container in Motor Vehicle Prohibited, DUI, 1st Degree Possession of a Controlled Substance (Meth), Possession of Marijuana, 1st Degree Trafficking in Controlled Substance Over 2 Grams of Methamphetamine, Trafficking Marijuana, Careless Driving and the One Headlight violation, as well as Failure to Produce Insurance Card.
