Lion’s Club Partners With KSP For Pilot Program

Crisis-affected children in Western Kentucky could soon receive comfort in the form of Blessing Bags filled with toys and other goodies intended to have a calming effect. Lion’s Club members in District 43-K spent Saturday afternoon at Lake Barkley State Resort Park Convention Center packing such items into bags that will then be given to Kentucky State Police to distribute.

The items, many of which were donated by businesses or individuals from Fulton to Henderson and everywhere in between, are part of a pilot program. Kimberly Spalding, of the Grand Rivers Lions Club, says the organization opted to try the new program prior to their district meeting held later Saturday night.

Among the comfort items were stress balls, bookmarks, flashlights and color-changing drinking cups whose color alters depending on whether a beverage is hot or cold. Spalding adds there may be more than one benefit to a child receiving them.

The state police were chosen as a partner for good reason, according to Spalding.

Spalding says the Lions Club intends to revisit the pilot in due time to see if it helped.
