Jails Look To Increase Safety With Legislation

The Senate passed a measure Tuesday designed to enhance security at cash-strapped county jails. Known as House Bill 92, the legislation would allow jail canteen profits to be used for the enhancement of jail safety and security. Christian County Jailer and Kentucky Jail Association President, Brad Boyd says this is something they asked the General Assembly to consider.

The current law states profits from the canteen must go toward the “well-being of the prisoners.”

Boyd says jails across the state hope to increase the security surveillance with this bill, specifically in the living areas.

He adds this has been proven in jails where they have chosen to put cameras already. Boyd says they know it will not stop all assaults or theft, but want to focus on increased safety.

HB 92 passed the Senate by a 34-2 vote. An amendment added an emergency clause, making the bill effective immediately upon approval by the governor rather than 90 days after adjournment. The measure now goes back to the House for consideration.
