Couple Waits Nearly 6 Hours To Cross Barkley Bridge

Dozens of people waited for most of the morning Monday to be among the first to cross the new Lake Barkley Bridge at Canton. The first in line was Charlie Blanton of Canton and his wife. The Blantons have lived in the area for two years and often travel the Lawrence Memorial Bridge.

They also have a home in Frankfort but say they spend as much time here as possible. The two have watched the progress of the project since it began.

The couple arrived at the western approach around 8:00am and waited patiently throughout the day.

Their dog Barney had his own snacks and view from the front seat. The Blantons are looking forward to driving the new bridge with their bass boat for recreation once it warms up.

Also waiting to cross the bridge was Jim Strelec, who for years he has driven across the bridges hauling horse trailers. He says he has lost many a side mirror meeting transfer trucks on the Lawrence Memorial Bridge. He is also excited about the additional space, even if it is just two lanes right now.
