Emergency Director Discusses I-24 Wreck Response

The training of emergency responders was put to the test this week when a fatal multiple vehicle crash closed Interstate-24. Christian County Emergency Management Director Randy Graham says crews ran through a multitude of scenarios during preparation for the August solar eclipse include an incident on the Interstate.

Monday’s eight vehicle wreck proved their training. Graham says there is a lot of coordination needed when 16 agencies and nearly 50 units are involved.

Eastbound lanes were closed for just about two hours.

One of Graham’s first duties in an incident like Monday is to notify state officials.

Graham adds they are well aware of the impact of closing the Interstate.

The westbound lanes were closed for over 15 hours and traffic clogged the bypass around Hopkinsville as it detoured along 68/80 back to I-24. Graham says he is not aware of any additional crashes because of the traffic.
