Second Victim Dies Following I-24 Crash

A second person has died following the large traffic accident Monday morning on Interstate 24 in south Christian County. Vanderbilt Medical Center confirmed that Joan Ryder Lyons of Wauken, Iowa, passed away Monday afternoon due to injuries she sustained in the accident.

According to social media post, Lyons was the sister of 55 year-old Mary Engrav who was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Christian County Deputy Coroner Zach Lamb. Engrav and Lyons were in one of the vehicles involved in a fiery crash that occurred around 10:30 in the Westbounds lanes of Interstate 24 near the KY 107-Lafayette Road overpass.

Kentucky State Police have released no details concerning the wreck. When contacted by the News Edge Tuesday morning, State Police at Post Two said the wreck was very complicated and it is taking officials a long time to piece together all the details.

On the scene of the wreck the News Edge observed one tractor trailer and three cars that were completely destroyed by fire. Also involved in the wreck was a second tractor trailer and at least one more vehicle were also involved in the wreck, but did not catch fire.

Hopkinsville Fire Department Public Information Officer Lieutenant Michael Pendleton says one person was flown from the scene of the wreck, with seven others taken to local hospitals.

Interstate 24 remained closed until early Tuesday morning to allow the wreck scene to be cleared up and Kentucky State Police to complete their investigation.
