Former HPD Officer Talks About Strong Alaska Earthquake

Residents of Alaska, including a former Hopkinsville Police Officer, were rattled by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake early Tuesday morning with tsunami warnings issued along the Pacific coast of the United States. Jeff Townsend, who now resides in Alaska about two hours north of Anchorage, tells the News Edge is was a strong earthquake.

He says they reported the earthquake was initially an 8.2 but it was downgraded to a 7.9.

Fortunately, Townsend says his cabin was not damaged and he has not heard of any damages reported in the state.

Although the USGS issued tsunami warnings, he says thankfully a tsunami did not occur.

Townsend says earthquakes are common and a daily occurrence in Alaska.

Townsend, who is a native of Michigan, has lived in the Last Frontier state for nearly six years. He is retired military and was an officer for the Hopkinsville Police Department for ten years until his retirement when he moved to Alaska. He says he does not have to work, but he works a seasonal job for Holland America and Princess as part of the security team from Denali National Park in order to stay busy.
